North side of Mt. Shasta Ski Trip

My friend Paj and I went skiing on the north side of the mountain today. It turned out to be an excellent day of skiing. Blue bird day. Beautiful views of the glaciers and ice falls. We were really glad that we took my truck. We got to a stretch of snow that was about 2 feet thick and 50 feet in length. It was still pretty early and not too soft. I had to break track through backing up and then going forward and finally breaking through to
the other side saving us over 2 miles of walking. We got within a mile of the trail head and walked the road. We were able to begin skinning up right from the trail head. We skinned for about 2 1/2 hours and topped out at around 9500' on top of a rock pinnacle. It was a little breezy. We prepared for heading down. We had to down climb the rocks to reach the snow. That was a little bit of an adventure. Stepping through moats and post holing. It was nice reaching the snow and putting the skis on. The skiing was excellent. Smooth and consistent.
Another beautiful day on the m

Hi Robin,
My brother and I went in North Gate on Friday evening and did some riding just above treeline on Saturday. The road is completely clear now. The snow is still fun. A bit slushy by noon, but not suncupped.
Cheers,
Eric (from Berkeley)
