Skiing Castle Lake Feb 4th and 7th
Thursday, Mary and I went up to Castle Lake to check out the skiing. The road has finally been plowed almost all the way.
It was dumping snow all the way!
This was the last picture I took that day. We climbed to Right Peak. It was sooo windy. Guessing around 35-40 m.p.h. We had to put on all the warm gear and try not to get blown away.
The top of Right Peak today (Sunday). First sunny day in a week.
Hooked up with a few friends and skied the back side of Right Peak. It was sweet!
Ben skinning back up to Right Peak from the back side.
Mt. Shasta peaking out. It's been a while.
Climbing back up to Right Peak, met up with more friends.
Looking over towards Left Peak and Castle Lake. It's definitely frozen.
Courtney and Allan. Great skiing with you both.
Ben taking a lunch break.
Back at the parking lot- or somewhat of a parking lot. A bit tricky trying to turn around. Another great ski adventure. Looks like Everitt Memorial Hwy will be open by the weekend.
Over 6 days with no power at the ski park and first day of beautiful sunshine, it seemed like at Saturday at the ski park. With the upper and lower parking lot full, it makes you wonder how many people were sick from work today???
Overly excited, I was one of the first in line. Started loading chairs at 8:45. Found a little bit of powder stashes throughout the day, but mostly crust off piste. Good on the groom slopes today.
Hooked up and skied with a lot of good friends today. Roger rippin it!
Looking over towards S.E. side of Mt. Shasta. Pretty windy. Road is plowed to McBride Springs and it may be awhile before it's plowed to Bunny Flat.
If only I got this picture centered. Mike shredding it!
Mike and Beth with the Trinity Alps in the background.
Shot video with my new camera. Here's the video of the day. Mike cutting teleturns on...ooops! What's the name of that run?
For the past few days we've had lots of snow, power outages, trees down, unplowed roads...
These are the lines in front of my house. They came down with this-
The awning that use to be part of my front porch. At 11:30 p.m., I heard a big crash. I wasn't sure if a tree fell through. Opening the front door, I found no more awning. It collasped.
A lot of people unfortunately weren't as lucky and trees fell through houses. Lots of down limbs with down power lines throughout the town.
I took this picture of town today (Friday). Finally a break in the weather. Most power is back on. I'm still waiting. I want to thank my neighbors for all their help with helping plowing my driveway and especially the Bryans for hooking me up to their generator and power-saving my fish and giving me power for my monitor heater. Over 100 inches of new snow on the mountain. Here's to a great ski and climbing season!
Located on the s.e. slope of Casaval Ridge. Today a few areas released avalanches.
Here's a close up. It worked its way down the gulch towards Spring Hill. Didn't see any enter or exit tracks from skiers.
Bart reaching the top of Green Butte Ridge heading to Lower Broadway. Great Skiing and snowboarding in the trees today. A bit windy up higher.
Ian enjoying turns down Lower Broadway.
Bart enjoying turns down Gerald's Bowl. Another great day with good friends in the backcountry.
Always remember check current weather and avalanche report when its available. Current avalanche activity is a clear sign of possible more slides to occur.
Mt. Shasta in all her glory. I took this picture Sunday January 10th. Looks like weather is coming our way. Maybe a foot +. We are around 70% of our normal snow pack for this time of year.
Search and Rescue on Mt. Shasta January 7th & 8th
This past Thursday/Friday we had a search and rescue on Mt. Shasta that I participated in. Just want to give a quick synopsis of the situation. An acquaintance of mine came up from the Bay area with a friend. They drove up for a day ski tour and planned on heading back that night. Around 5:00 p.m that evening I received a phone call from Nikki at 5th Season Retail Store explaining to me that his friend hadn't made it back to the parking lot yet. It was beginning to get dark. I got ahold of Eric who's the wilderness ranger. He was already notified and began the process of gathering information and heading up. I got my equipment together and went up the mountain. At Bunny Flat we began putting together a plan. Fortunately, we had contact with the lost skier by phone. He gave us a description of where he thought is was located. Dan (wilderness ranger) and myself were on skis and Danni who was driving the snowmobile began the search. We started at BF and worked our way down to McBride Springs following his ski tracks most of the way. Stopping, calling his name, following his tracks (we think) never to come up with anything. The search continued until around midnight. The next morning, we heading up the mountain. After arriving in the parking lot around 9:15 or so we hung out waiting for any information. The next thing I know I look over at their car and there is the lost skier. A truck drove up and dropped him off. I ran over to find out if he was okay and what happened. He was glad to be back at his car. As it turned out he did spend the night out there. It was a pretty warm night thankfully and at dawn he got his bearings and began walking. He ended up at McBride Springs rd and came upon a logger who gave him a ride back up the mountain. He was a very happy camper! I would like to commend him for keeping a positive attitude and willingness to live for the successful outcome of this search. For just a day tour, he had quite a few items for his overnight adventure. Unfortunately, he did lose a ski so if anyone comes across a ski on the McBride Run, bring it to the Ranger Station. Party separation was the main reason for this incident happening. Both skiers were skiing together until the last run. They separated close to the Bunny Flat trail head. Learning Tip~It's always important to keep a visual on whoever your skiing with even if it's just for a short distance.
Started out my New Year with the Norcaladventurers group on a snowshoe/ski hike to Chaos Crags located in Lassen National Park.
Chaos Crags is the youngest group of lava domes in Lassen that formed around 1,100 years ago.
Here's our group with Josh center stage. This is the basin. Still need more snow. Coverage okay.
Looks like some good skiing up in the couloir. I would like to when it's in good and solid shape.
The party afterwards. We stopped at this cool pizza place and toasted to the New Year! Check us out~www.norcaladventurers.com

Jason and his 2 beautiful daughters. Starting them early. Way to go!
This is Broadway. Coverage is getting better and better. Lower Broadway down through the trees has been good skiing. Today it warmed up making it just right.
The skin up the last section before reaching tree line. It's a grunt!
The rewards!!!
Mt. Eddy across the way on the west side located in the Eddys, Klamath Mountain Range.
This morning was a beautiful morning and then the clouds came rolling in.
Heading up towards the Gemini Tree.
Coverage is pretty good now in the gulch. Still need a little more snow especially on the s.e. slopes of Casaval Ridge.
Got this picture right before the clouds starting rolling in. A few slides happening above Helen Lake below the Trinity Chutes. Beware of avalanches. Signs are out there. Join Mt. Shasta Fun Guide on Facebook
